WR Corey Coleman signs with the Chiefs after sitting out of football in ’21

NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reports that wide receiver Corey Coleman is returning to the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday afternoon.

Coleman, 27, entered the league with the Cleveland Browns in 2016 as the 15th overall pick coming off of two impressive seasons with the Baylor Bears to cap off his college career. However, things came crashing down quickly as the receiver became a pro.

Injuries plagued Coleman’s first two seasons with the Browns, including breaking the same hand twice and spending most of the 2016 and 2017 campaigns on injured reserve. Coleman ended up playing just 19 games in two years for Cleveland, catching 56 passes for 718 yards and five touchdowns. In 2018, Coleman demanded the Browns trade during an episode of HBO’s Hard Knocks, a wish that was granted on August 5, 2018

His stint with the Bills didn’t last; however, spending almost a month before getting released. On September 11, he was signed to the New England Patriots’ practice squad before getting released at the end of the month.

The following October, he was picked up by the New York Giants, where he appeared in eight games, recording five catches for 71 yards. His last recorded catch in a regular-season game was December 16, 2018.

During the 2019 preseason, Coleman tore his ACL, which ended his season. In 2020, he spent parts of the campaign on the Giants’ practice squad before spending the 2021 season out of football. Although he wasn’t on a club, the NFL still suspended him for the first six games of the season due to violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

Despite a rough start due to poor circumstances and injuries, the Chiefs are offering him an opportunity to restart his football career.
