Tyreek Hill thought Patrick Mahomes ‘was trash’ when QB first enter the NFL

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill had a monster game last Sunday in a 27-24 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Hill caught 13 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns against the Bucs, showing the rest of the National Football League how explosive he can be when left in single coverage.

For a brief time, Hill led the NFL in receiving yards with 1,021 but has taken a back seat to Seattle WR D.K. Metcalf, who leapfrogged him by 18 yards (1,039) following a huge performance on Monday Night Football (10 catches for 177 yards).

On Tuesday evening, Hill on Showtime’s Inside the NFL and spoke with hosts Phil Simms, Ray Lewis, and Brandon Marshall about his recent production, his personal top five WRs list, track, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

When speaking about the best QB in the NFL, Phil Simms asked Hill about his thoughts on Mahomes during the first week of training camp in 2017 (Mahomes’ rookie season). Hill didn’t hesitate to admit he didn’t like what he first saw.

“I thought he was trash, I ain’t gonna cap.” Hill laughed. “When he first got there, I was like – this is who y’all drafted right here?”

Kansas City traded up 17 slots to the 10th overall pick in 2017 to select Patrick Mahomes. At the time, Hill wasn’t the only one who was skeptical of the pick. Mahomes was a raw talent that many draft analysts didn’t believe he’d ever be able to conform to an NFL offense, let alone become a solid starting QB.

Mahomes spent the majority of his rookie campaign on the bench, learning from former Chiefs starting QB Alex Smith. The following year was the Texas Tech product’s time to shine, and as the kid from Tyler Texas lit up the NFL, he also won the respect of his teammates and the rest of the football world.

“Look, he proved me into a total, complete…I don’t know man…it’s just that second year (2018) his quarterback mechanics were different, he was spending more time with his QB coach, spending more time with coach [Andy] Reid, learning the offense…the dude was just different,” Hill recalled.

Mahomes proved a lot of doubters wrong in his first season as a starter as he threw for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns, winning the M.V.P. award. Since then, Kansas City’s star QB has mounted up a ton of success, winning Super Bowl LIV and earning SB MVP on top, shattering countless passing records through his first four seasons in the league.

On Twitter, Mahomes had some fun with his wideout, calling him out following his remarks on national television.

But there appears to be nothing but love and respect between these two and inside the Chiefs locker room.

The Chiefs are 10-1 on the season and seem to be unstoppable right now. Kansas City is on pace to finish with the best record in franchise history and will face the Denver Broncos (4-7) this weekend.

In 2020, Patrick Mahomes has completed 68.8 percent of his passes for 3,497 yards, 30 touchdowns, and just 2 interceptions. While Tyreek Hill is the league’s second-leading receiver with 68 receptions for 1,021 yards and 13 TDs.
