Tyrann Mathieu hopes to remain in K.C. for the rest of his career

Kansas City Chiefs star safety Tyrann Mathieu has reached the top of his game since signing a three-year contract to join Andy Reid and company in 2019. During a media session on Monday afternoon, Mathieu said he’d ‘love’ to stay with the Chiefs for the foreseeable future until he retires.

“I would love to spend the rest of my time in Kansas City,” said Mathieu. “Like I said, everybody’s embraced me here. It reminds me so much of a football town. I think, for me, that’s everything, just waking up, seeing the family, and then going to play football … I try not to get into it. I try to let people who work for me handle that. But obviously, you want to be locked in long-term … I try to put in enough work today that things like that are going to take care of themselves.”

Mathieu will be entering the final year of his current deal as the start to the 2021 season looms ahead. This means it’s time for talks regarding an extension to begin at some point. Luckily, the Chiefs have not hidden their desire to agree to terms on a new contract that would keep the Honey Badger in Kansas City for the long term.

After seeing how General Manager Brett Veach likes to handle the NFL off-season, there likely isn’t any rush to meet with Mathieu’s representatives in order to strike a deal right away. However, some sort of framework between the Chiefs’ front office and Mathieu’s agents was likely laid out to set an appropriate time and place for talks to begin.

In the short time, he’s been with Kansas City, Mathieu has been sensational for the Chiefs and has become one of the top safeties in the league. When he joined the team ahead of the 2019 season, his addition made an immediate impact on defense that helped propel Kansas City to win the Super Bowl in his first season.

In 2020, Mathieu finished with 64 tackles and 6 interceptions to help send the Chiefs on a second-consecutive trip to the Super Bowl. He was also named a First-Team All-Pro for the second-straight season and was named to the Pro Bowl for the second time ever.
