TRADE ALERT: Chiefs trade RB to Miami for 2021 draft pick

Just before the NFL trade deadline at 4 p.m. eastern, the Kansas City Chiefs are sending one of their running backs to south beach for a late-round selection in the 2021 NFL Draft.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport reports the Chiefs are sending running back DeAndre Washington and a 2021 7th-round draft pick for a 2021 6th-round draft pick.

While some were hoping the Chiefs would trade for a player, they instead opt to unload what was a very crowded running back room and get some compensation for a player who was pretty far down the Chiefs’ depth chart. After adding former Jets and Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell, the Chiefs had five backs on their active roster before making the trade.

DeAndre Washington was a former teammate of Patrick Mahomes while at Texas Tech and spent time with the Oakland Raiders from 2016-2019 as a late-round draft selection. He was picked up by the Chiefs on April 15, 2020, and bounced between Kansas City’s practice squad and active roster before being sent to Dolphins.

Washington is now on his third team in four years and joins another crowded backfield as the sixth back on Miami’s roster.
