Three former Chiefs inducted into College Football HOF

The National Football Foundation (NFF) and the College Hall of Fame announced the list of 17 First Team All-American players and two coaches that will make up the College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2020 on Wednesday.

The list includes many names that performed at the highest level while on the gridiron at the collegiate and some, at the professional level including; Eric Dickerson, E.J. Henderson, and Steve McNair.

The list also includes defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, wide receiver Elmo Wright and linebacker Bob Stein, all of which were eventually drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs following their college careers.

Dorsey played three seasons with the LSU Tigers from 2005 to 2007 and was an absolute specimen along the defensive line, mounting up a combined 154 tackles and 13 sacks to finish his college career. Dorsey was regarded as one of the highest-rated defensive linemen heading into the 2008 NFL draft and was selected 5th overall by Kansas City.

Unfortunately, Dorsey wasn’t as dominant at the pro level as he was while in college. He played at defensive tackle his rookie year and was converted to be a defensive end opposite teammate Tyson Jackson in former Chiefs Head Coach Todd Haley’s 3-4 defensive scheme.

Dorsey played for the Chiefs from 2008 to 2012 and after five seasons of lackluster play, Dorsey was released and he moved onto San Francisco and played for the 49ers until finally retiring in 2017.

Dorsey finished his pro career with 323 tackles and 7 sacks.

For what some might refer to as a ‘bust’, Dorsey played well enough to last nine seasons in the NFL but never became the dominant wrecking ball that he was while at LSU.

Dorsey also happens to be the only recent player many fans will remember as opposed to Elmo Wright and Bob Stein, who played during the Chiefs’ AFL and early NFL days.

Bob Stein was a defensive end for the Minnesota Golden Gophers from 1966-1968 and was drafted by Hank Stram of the Chiefs 126th overall in the 5th round of the 1969 draft. While with the Chiefs, Stein was converted to play linebacker and spent most of his time in Kansas City, as a backup for starters Bobby Bell, Willie Lanier, and Jim Lynch. Stein left the Chiefs in 1973 and played for the L.A. Rams, Minnesota Vikings, and San Diego Chargers before retiring from football in 1976.

While wide receiver Elmo Wright would go onto catching passes from storied quarterback Len Dawson and playing alongside Otis Taylor. Wright played wide receiver for the University of Houston from 1968 to 1970, catching a combined 153 receptions for 3,347 yards and 34 touchdowns.

His impressive production impressed Kansas City and was selected 16th overall by the Chiefs in the 1971 NFL draft. Wright played four seasons in Kansas City, totaling 66 receptions for 1,070 yards and 6 touchdowns. In 1975, Wright would have short stints with the Houston Oilers and New England Patriots before retiring.

The 2020 College HOF class will be officially inducted during the 63rd NFF Annual Awards Dinner Presented by ETT on Dec. 8 at the New York Hilton Midtown. You can find more information here.
