Rover Moves: Chiefs waive TE Ricky Seals-Jones and activate four from practice squad

The Kansas City Chiefs made a series of roster moves on Saturday, as they adjusted their roster for the final game of the season against the Los Angeles Chargers. The Week 17 matchup will be treated just like a pre-season game by Kansas City, who locked up the first-round bye in the AFC playoffs last week against Atlanta.

Among the moves, the Chiefs announced on Twitter that tight end Ricky Seals-Jones had been waived by the team, and four players from the practice squad have been activated.

Ricky Seals-Jones was signed to a one-year contract last off-season after spending last season with the Cleveland Browns. Many felt the Chiefs offensive scheme would’ve been a perfect match for Jones’ receiving ability to flourish. However, Seals-Jones appeared in only two games for Kansas City, dropping the only pass that came his way.

With Seals-Jones off the team and Travis Kelce likely not suiting up, the Chiefs will lean on tight ends Deon Yelder and Nick Keizer on offense.

From the practice squad, the Chiefs activated the following players: QB Matt Moore, OL Patrick Omameh, WR Gehrig Dieter, and DB DeAndre Baker.

Matt Moore will be the backup behind starter Chad Henne but could see some playing time at some point during the last game of the season.

Patrick Omemeh will likely provide depth along the o-line but could get a chance to give the coaches some looks that might translate into an opportunity to make the team in 2021.

Sunday will be a huge opportunity for veteran receiver Gehrig Dieter, who’s been fighting to make it back onto the active roster since the 2018 season came to a close.

The Chiefs will also get a long look at defensive back DeAndre Baker in a starting role and see how his skillset might fight in the long term on defense.

Of course, these are just some of the names that will be active on Sunday. The game at Arrowhead Stadium is expected to be very backup heavy on the Chiefs’ sideline as Head Coach Andy Reid treats the final game of the 2020 season as a pre-season matchup while the starters rest up for the divisional round of the postseason two weeks from now.
