Roster Cuts: Chiefs release offensive tackle Roderick Johnson, waive four UDFAs

The Kansas City Chiefs have some tough decisions to make over the next few days as the coaching staff and upstairs office go through their evaluations to construct the team’s 53-man roster for the start of the 2022 NFL season. All 32 clubs must submit a final 53-man roster by 3 p.m. on Tuesday, August 30.

On Saturday, the Chiefs have decided the fates of five NFL hopefuls: releasing offensive tackle Roderick Johnson, and waiving QB Dustin Crum, RB Tayon Fleet-Davis, WR Aaron Parker, and LB Mike Rose.

These players are free to sign with another team. They could also return to Kansas City in early September when the Chiefs assemble their practice squad.

Roderick Johnson, 26, was one of two veterans amongst the players released by the Chiefs this afternoon.

Johnson first entered the NFL in 2017 as a fifth-round draft pick by the Cleveland Browns. He also spent time with the Houston Texans (2018-20) and Miami Dolphins (2021) before he signed with the Chiefs on January 19 of this year. After the ’21 season, Kansas City offered him a Reserve/Futures contract on February 2.

The other was Aaron Parker, who entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2020 and spent time in Dallas and Carolina before signing with the Chiefs in early 2022.

Of the undrafted rookies that had a chance to make the team, Mike Rose was probably the biggest name.

Rose grew to be a fan favorite this preseason, particularly with the northern portion of Chiefs fans who also bleed red and gold on Saturdays, cheering for Iowa State.

Rose was a star linebacker for the Cyclones during his tenure at ISU, recording 324 total tackles over his four year career in the college ranks. Rose is definitely a player the Chiefs may attempt to bring to the practice squad if he is still available.
After these roster moves, Kansas City’s roster currently sits at 75 total players.
