Report: Chiefs sign DT Chris Jones to 4-year contract

Days after Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes received his record-breaking contract extension from the team, star defensive tackle Chris Jones can now say the same.

After receiving the franchise tag from Kansas City on March 16, 2020, sources have told ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network‘s Ian Rapoport that Jones has agreed to a 4-year contract worth $85 million with $60 million guaranteed.

Locking up Jones was a long time coming for both sides which had a rocky relationship dating back to last year over a contract dispute, with Jones holding out of mini-camps and even threatening not to suit up with the team. However, all that can now be put behind them as Kansas City locks up two of their best players going into the 2020 season.

Signing Jones also displays Brett Veach’s brilliance when the Chiefs’ front office constructed Patrick Mahomes’ contract to have no net impact on the team’s salary cap for this year and next year, allowing Veach to have the short-term financial flexibility to pay solid players like Chris Jones on the roster for the long haul.

Brett Veach is easily becoming the greatest general manager in Chiefs history as he locks up two of big-money players in the same off-season to put Kansas City in the best position to not only defend their title as Super Bowl Champions but also kick-off a dynasty.
