Report: Chiefs could move up in first round of 2022 NFL Draft

The 2022 NFL Draft is under 24 hours away, and a new report says the Kansas City Chiefs are calling various teams around the National Football League about a potential trade to move up in the first round.

The report comes from Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, who says the Chiefs are looking for a trade partner to be better positioned to take a quality player. Kansas City isn’t looking to make a considerable jump per se, but a small leap that would put them in the late teens to early twenties. Breer mentions the Chiefs could pursue multiple trades on Day One.

“As has been expected, with 12 picks and two first-rounders in the chamber, the Chiefs have started to call teams through the 20s about trading up. It might be for a receiver. But I wouldn’t rule out an aggressive move for a corner or pass rusher either. And it’s possible Kansas City will jump from Nos. 29 or 30 up, ten spots or so, then leap again.

What seems certain is that GM Brett Veach won’t stay static. And part of that, for sure, is that the Chiefs probably don’t have room on their roster for 12 rookies to make the team.”

This report connects with what general manager Brett Veach said just a few days ago during his predraft presser. Veach mentioned he didn’t envision the team moving up to the top-10 but wouldn’t rule out a smaller trade to be in a better spot to get one of the 16-18 players he feels is worth a first-round draft pick.

Nobody knows who that player the Chiefs are eyeballing to make a trade up for would-be or if there is such a player on their draft board that would warrant such a move. However, it doesn’t hurt to be diligent and see what teams would be willing to offer.

Breer does mention if the Chiefs were to trade up, it’d probably be for a wide receiver, cornerback, or a pass rusher. Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams is a player the team has met with and could be someone Veach tries to get by trading up.

Of course, this doesn’t guarantee the Chiefs will make a trade on draft day, but it shows that Veach and his staff are trying to prepare for every possible option should an opportunity present itself.

The first round of the NFL Draft begins on Thursday at 7 p.m. central standard time.
