Recapping the latest Roster and Salary Cap adjustments

General Manager Brett Veach made a hand full of adjustments to the roster and the salary cap the past few days. Just in case you missed anything, here’s a quick recap of what the Chiefs GM has been up to.

Hunter and Dieter waived

Cornerback Michael Hunter and wide receiver Gehrig Dieter were each given injury settlements prior to their release last week. Both players were placed on injured reserve during final roster cuts in late August. Hunter was waived on Wednesday, September 4, and cleared through waivers the following day, making him a free agent. A few days later, Dieter was dealt the same fate the following Saturday and is now a free agent after clearing waivers yesterday.

Fisher and Hitchens contract adjustments

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Chiefs reworked the contracts of left tackle Eric Fisher and linebacker Anthony Hitchens on Tuesday, creating nearly $10.6M in additional cap space.

Fisher and Hitchens were two of Kansas City’s highest-paid players for the 2019 season before their contacts were restructured.

The additional cap space has since caused speculation that the team is gearing up for some kind of major roster transaction, whether that be a contract extension for defensive tackle Chris Jones, a splash in free agency, or a blockbuster trade. However, it could also just be Veach keeping the team in a stable position financially.

DAT’s return gets Pringle waived

Lastly, wide receiver DeAnthony Thomas has returned to the team after serving a one-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on and program on substances of abuse. In order to make room for Thomas on the 53-man roster, Terez Paylor of Yahoo! Sports reports the Chiefs have waived receiver Byron Pringle.

After the news broke, Matt Derrick of Chiefs Digest tweeted the team intends to re-sign Pringle to the practice squad soon as he clears waivers. However, the Chiefs won’t know if he does or not until tomorrow afternoon.
