Patrick Mahomes responds to new restructured contract

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been atop the NFL as arguably the greatest quarterback to ever play the game. On Monday, he agreed on a record-breaking contract restructure that pays him even more guaranteed cash.

To create more space in the salary cap, the Kansas City Chiefs and All-Pro QB Patrick Mahomes agreed to restructure his current deal, giving him $210.6 million between 2023 and 2026. The new agreement is the most money in NFL history over a four-season span, with compensation for those years now guaranteed.

On Wednesday, Mahomes took to the podium after practice and expressed gratitude for his new contract.

“Yeah, I’m in a great spot. I have a lot of great people around me, [and I am] very thankful to the Hunt family and the Chiefs organization. And [I’m] glad that now I can go out there and play football.” said Mahomes, “And so you get that security, and I already had it, but to get a little bump, and then be able to go back out there and just play football. I’m excited for it.”

Equity Sports CEO Chris Cabott negotiated the deal on Mahomes’ behalf. The Super Bowl champion hinted he wasn’t a fan of how contract negotiations can go but is happy his camp and the Chiefs were able to find the right spot that makes sense for both sides.

“Yeah, it’s hard you get to watch, see what’s going on around the league, and find that right spot. And I thought we found a good one in this negotiation that we did that; we’ll be able to still [have] space for other guys to get signed.” Mahomes explained, “But obviously, I got a little bit more money upfront, and then we’ll redo it and renegotiate whenever we get to that mark that we talked about. So it’s a special place and a special relationship that I have with the team to trust them. Even when I signed the last contract, know that this was going to happen, and then probably going to happen again, at some point.”

According to a previous report, Mahomes and the Chiefs will revisit contract talks after the 2026 NFL season. Until then, Mahomes can focus on one thing: competing for championships.
