Patrick Mahomes eyes perfect season with Chiefs in 2021

Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is down in the Hawaiian islands this Memorial Day weekend for his first annual 15 and the Mahomies Aloha Golf Classic presented by Coors Light.

On Sunday afternoon, Mahomes sat down with Bleacher Report’s Kayla Nicole at the Coors Light ‘Chill Zone’

Right off the bat, Nicole asked Mahomes what records he’s looking to break during the upcoming 2021 NFL season. The star QB was quick to say he’s got his sights set on a 20-win season.

“The only record I have my eyes set on breaking, which would be new this year, would be going 20-0,” Mahomes said. “It’s not really a record to be broken I guess you would say—19-0 is the record right now—so being able to go 20-0 and being the first one to do that, that would be awesome.”

With the amount of success Mahomes has had thus far after just three seasons as a starter in the NFL, it’s hard to blame him for really shooting for the stars. The 25-year-old QB already has an MVP award, a Lombardi, and two Super Bowl appearances.

But going undefeated was already a difficult thing to achieve. But now, with the 17th regular-season game that was added this year, it’ll be even tougher.

In the Super Bowl era, only the 1972 Miami Dolphins successfully pulled off an undefeated season, going 17-0, which included 14 regular-season wins. Since then, no team has been able to go the entire stretch of an NFL season without suffering at least one loss.

In 2007, the New England Patriots got the closest after winning all 16 regular-season games before appearing in Super Bowl 42, where they’d lose to Eli Manning and the New York Giants.

However, if there’s anyone in today’s NFL that could pull off an undefeated season, Mahomes’ Chiefs would be a good bet. Mahomes is 38-8 as a starter, and his touchdown-interception ratio is an incredible 114-24.

Kansas City also had an impressive off-season where they particularly retooled the offensive line and added a load of talent through the draft. The Chiefs’ schedule also reigns favorable, with only six of their matchups being against playoff teams from a year ago, five of whom will play Kansas City within the first nine weeks of the season.

If the Chiefs can get through the first half of their schedule unscathed, then an undefeated season could be in play as long they stay out of their own way. Nonetheless, the first team to achieve a 20-0 season will find an indisputable place within the NFL history books, something Mahomes is already on the cusp of doing.
