OFFICIAL: Chiefs sign CB Deandre Baker

The Kansas City Chiefs have officially signed former Giants cornerback Deandre Baker to the practice squad on Wednesday morning. The Chiefs will be adding another former first-round pick to their talented secondary as soon as he’s up to speed with Steve Spagnuolo’s defensive scheme.

Baker, 23, played just one season with the Giants before his world was turned upside down. He played all 16 games in 2019 for New York, mounting up 55 total tackles (42 solo) and 8 pass deflections.

The Giants released Baker back in September 2020 when he was already on the Commissioner’s exempt list. Allegedly, Baker was the assailant in an armed robbery attempt at a party in Miami. However, Baker had insisted the entire time these were false allegations.

In the end, it was eventually revealed that the lawyer involved, as well as multiple accusers, were all trying to extort Baker and the charges were dropped.

Baker initially wanted to return to the New York Giants. However, the club declined any further interest in the young corner’s services.

In come the Chiefs, who appear to be Baker’s next opportunity in the NFL. Baker is a bright young talent and will now join an organization filled with very respectable coaches and a great supporting cast.

Baker likely won’t be making his Chiefs debut for a few weeks. In the mean time, he’ll be learning the team’s defensive playbook and working on his conditioning to get back into football shape.
