NFL Off-season: Chiefs sign veteran LB Kamalei Correa

After signing two other players on Wednesday afternoon, the Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly added another free agent this evening.

According to Chiefs beat writer Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star, the Chiefs have signed veteran linebacker Kamalei Correa.

Corra, 27, is a five-year vet who began his NFL career as a second-round draft pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2016. As a Raven, he didn’t receive much playing time over his first two seasons and was traded to the Tennessee Titans in 2018.

In Nashville, Corra played as an outside linebacker in Tennessee’s 3-4 defensive scheme and registered 56 total tackles and 8.5 sacks in his first two seasons with the Titans. In 2020, Corra began to slide down the Titans’ depth chart and was traded to Jacksonville.

However, Corra’s stint with the Jags didn’t last very long when the team released him for leaving the club for personal reasons.

Corra now joins the Chiefs, who could have him convert to defensive end to fit with Steve Spagnulo’s 4-3 defensive scheme. Standing at 6-feet-3-inches and 241-pounds, Corra is a bit on the lighter side in terms of the size of what a typical DE in Spag’s system traditionally is. He could also see some playing time as a rushing linebacker in certain situations.

Kansas City already maxed out their 90-man roster limit after signing former Broncos defensive back Will Parks earlier today. That means, to officially add Corra to the roster, they’ll need to make room by releasing someone so stay tuned for Brett Veach to make at least one more move very soon.
