Morning Recap: Kansas City blows out Chicago 41-10

The Kansas City Chiefs put their offensive struggles from the last two games behind them on Sunday afternoon, as quarterback Patrick Mahomes had a field day against Chicago’s defense as the Chiefs improved to 2-1 on the season after a 41-10 win on GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

Mahomes finished Week 3 by completing 24 of 33 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns. Kansas City quickly ran away from the Bears by scoring 34 unanswered points in the first half. The Chiefs began their scoring entourage in the first quarter with a fake Jet-Sweep that used wide receiver Skyy Moore as a decoy before Mahomes pitched the ball to running back Jerick McKinnon for a six-yard score.

In the second quarter, the Chiefs found the end zone on a one-yard run by Clyde Edwards-Helaire to cap off a 12-play, 80-yard drive on their first possession of the period. After forcing Chicago to punt, the Chiefs drove another 88 yards in 12 plays before McKinnon scored his second touchdown of the game. He finished with three catches for 19 yards and two scores.

Up 21-0 with 3:05 in the first half, on 1st and 15, Bears QB Justin Fields completed a short pass to running back Khalil Herbert, who fumbles the ball on the Chicago 25-yard line. The play ends with linebacker Willie Gay making the recovery for the game’s first takeaway. Three plays later, Kansas City records a Harrison Butker 41-yard field goal to extend the lead to 24-0

On Chicago’s next possession, they turned the ball over again as Fields attempted a pass for receiver Chase Claypool but was intercepted by safety Mike Edwards, who ran the other way 16 yards before getting pushed out of bounds at the Bears’ 26.

Four plays later, Kansas City improves their lead after Mahomes completes two passes to rookie receiver Rashee Rice, one for a 12-yard gain and another for 13, before letting Isiah Pacheco rush the ball into the end zone for a one-yard score to run up the score 31-0 with 1:08 left in the first half. Kansas City added three more points before the half expired after forcing Chicago to punt on their final possession of the second quarter.

Kansas City scored another touchdown in the third quarter after traveling 63 yards in 12 plays. Mahomes completed a 37-yard bomb to receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling to convert 3rd and 6 on the 40-yard line to advance to Chicago’s 26. Seven plays later, with 7:44 on the clock, three yards from the goal line, Mahomes connects with Travis Kelce for the score. Kelce finished the game with seven catches for 69 yards and a score. After the touchdown that put the Chiefs in front 41-0, head coach Andy Reid elected to pull his starters to avoid injury and plugged back-up QB Blaine Gabbert into the game.

Gabbert finished three of five for 33 yards passing and threw two interceptions. Kansas City allowed the Bears to score ten points in the fourth quarter but managed to run the clock out to collect the 41-10 victory.
