Mahomes’ MRI reveals no ligament damage, expected to return after a ‘short absence’

The Kansas City Chiefs and their fans received to best of news regarding Patrick Mahomes’ injury status. According to his MRI results, Mahomes suffered no ligament damage after dislocating his knee cap in Thursday night’s game against the Broncos.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on the injury earlier today prior to the MRI being done on Mahomes’ right knee, “My understanding is that Patrick Mahomes does, in fact, have a dislocated knee cap, our James Palmer was on the scene last night and told us quickly thereafter, [Mahomes] is also going to get an MRI done later today to determine ligament damage,” explained Rapoport. “Obviously, it looked like a dire injury, as bad as it could be, but pretty quickly thereafter though, optimism came and the view right now, Patrick Mahomes is expected to miss about three weeks pending the results of the MRI,” Rapoport said.

Rapoport tweeted the latest via twitter on Mahomes injury, following the release of the MRI results.

Since the results from the MRI showed no ligament damage, three weeks should remain the estimated time frame before Mahomes to returns to the Chiefs.

Where does this leave Kansas City? Matt Moore will be under center for the following three games against the Packers, Vikings, and Titans. Best case, Mahomes could return on November 18 when the Chiefs play the L.A.Chargers on Monday Night Football.

However, with the Chiefs heading into their bye the following week, Reid could sit Mahomes for the Chargers game and allow his quarterback more time to heal going into the bye. If that happens, Mahomes won’t return until the start of December when the Chiefs take on Oakland at Arrowhead Stadium.

Losing Mahomes also means Kansas City will be tweaking the roster around once more since they only have one healthy quarterback on the active roster. Some are hoping for a trade involving Eli Manning or even signing Colin Kaepernick off the street. Though I don’t think the Chiefs are going to do anything that extreme, I expect Kyle Shurmur to be activated from the practice and someone else to be placed on waivers to make room.
