Kansas City receives no extra picks for upcoming draft

The National Football League announced who’ll be the recipients of additional compensatory draft picks for 2020 on Monday, March 9. Unfortunately, of the 15 teams that were awarded a combined 32 draft selections, the Chiefs were not one of them.

Kansas City will be left with just five draft picks for the 2020 NFL Draft; a 1st (32nd), 2nd (63rd), 3rd (96th), 4th (138th), and a 5th (177th). The team already traded their 6th and 7th round draft choices to acquire linebacker Darron Lee and safety Jordan Lucas.

However, there are a few options for the team to acquire more picks before the start of the draft next month. The Chiefs could do that by trading defensive tackle Chris Jones, was given the franchise tag a few weeks ago, or wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who has been speculated to be moving on from Kansas City due to his $21 million cap hit for 2020.

The Chiefs could also trade out of the first round, where they have not made a selection since taking quarterback Patrick Mahomes with the 10th overall pick in 2017.

The Chiefs were awarded one compensatory pick in 2019 and used it to select running back Darwin Thompson.
