Kansas City re-signs FB Anthony Sherman and DT Mike Pennel

The Kansas City Chiefs announced late last night, they have re-signed fullback Anthony Sherman and defensive tackle Mike Pennel to one-year contracts.

Both players had a contributing element to Kansas City’s Super Bowl victory. Sherman paved the way for running back Damien Williams on offense while Pennel played a key role in Kansas City’s defense as a run-stuffer.

Sherman, 31, has been an incredibly cheap option for the Chiefs and has been one of the best players at the fullback position since Tony Richardson was in K.C.

Much like the 2019 offseason, Sherman signs another one-year deal to remain in Kansas City for his eighth season with the Chiefs.

As for Pennel, he was an NFL outcast before arriving in Kansas City as one of General Manager Brett Veach’s late-season pickups last year. Now, the Topeka native has found his home as one of the team’s premier run-stoppers.

At 6-foot-4-inches and 330-pounds, Pennel’s presence drastically improved the Chiefs defense and their ability to stop opposing run games from moving the chains.

Pennel had made it known throughout the early portion of the offseason of his desire to return to the team and Steve Spagnuolo’s defense;

“I’d definitely like to stay here,” Pennel said, via the Kansas City Star during the NFL combine. “I know this is the place where I work well with the coaches, I love the fan base, I love the city and my family stays out here. I know it’s a business, but I told my agents and I told everybody in the Kansas City Chiefs organization that I’d like to be back.”

According to the NFL’s Tom Pelissero, Pennel reportedly received other offers from multiple teams but wanted to stay in Kansas City.

Pennel finished 2019 with 24 combined tackles and one sack.

Anthony Sherman and Mike Pennel are two of the five free agents from one of my earlier posts,‘Top Five Free Agents the Chiefs Should Bring Back’. Of that list, linebacker Reggie Ragland is the only former Chief that is still on the open market.

So far, the team has also brought back quarterback Chad Henne, picked the contract options for RB Damien Williams and LB Damien Wilson, and re-signed OL Andrew Wylie and TE Dion Yelder as restricted free agents.
