Kansas City places DT Chris Jones on reserve/COVID-19 list

THE FOLLOWING IS A RETRACTION AND A REWRITE OF THE NEWS THAT BROKE EARLIER SURROUNDING CHRIS JONES.

The Kansas City Chiefs have placed their star defensive tackle, Chris Jones, to the reserve/COVID-19 list Thursday.

Jones was listed as a limited participant in Thursday’s practice, according to the team’s injury report, for reasons non-injury related.

It is important to note Jones did not contract nor become infected with the virus, but was a close contact to someone who did have COVID-19. Due to league’s COVID-19 protocol, it is currently unclear when he’ll be able to return to the Chiefs or if he’ll be available for Sunday’s matchup with the Carolina Panthers.

In a statement, team officials said following:

“The club was notified this morning that a staff member has tested positive for COVID-19.”

“The individual is self-quarantining, under the team’s medical care, and contact tracing is taking place. The team is now in the NFL’s Intensive Protocol and working closely with the league and medical experts.

“The health and safety of our players, coaches and staff members remains our number one priority.”

Thursday’s practice was moved up a few hours and was closed for the rest of the day.

Depending on what Jones’ status might be, it msy be safe to say the Chiefs will have to rely on defensive tackles Derrick Nnadi, Mike Pennel, Khalen Saunders, and Tershawn Wharton to pick up the slack in Jones’ potential absence.

In seven games this season, Jones currently leads the Chiefs with 4.5 sacks and has 22 tackles (13 solo) and one pass deflection on the year.
