Kansas City Chiefs sign kicker Harrison Butker to 4-year extension

One way the Kansas City Chiefs make sure they remain a championship contender each year is by keeping the star players that helped them get to where they are in the first place. Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Chris Jones have all received massive paydays from the Chiefs’ front office at one point or another during their careers. Staying within the theme of paying their own players, general manager Brett Veach has managed to strike a deal that keeps another important piece of the team’s Super Bowl-winning formula.

First reported by NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Kansas City Chiefs agreed to terms with kicker Harrison Butker on a 4-year, $25.6 million contract extension with $17.8 million in guarantees. Butker was in the final year of the last deal he signed back in 2019, and after another incredible season where he finished with a career-high making 94.3% of his field goal attempts, the Chiefs didn’t want to risk losing him to the open market next spring.

Butker’s quietly put together an impressive NFL career since entering the league as a seventh-round draft choice by the Carolina Panthers in 2017 – before Kansas City scooped him up off their practice squad that September – and is building a reputation for having one of the strongest legs in the NFL.

Butker was perfect beyond 40 yards in 2023 (including 5 field goals made from 50+) with his longest being from 60 yards. He even set a Super Bowl record by hitting from 57 yards in the third quarter of Super Bowl LVIII.

Butker’s spent his entire career playing for the Chiefs despite being drafted by another franchise, and has been a part of all four of the team’s Super Bowl appearances with three rings to show. In seven seasons, Butker has scored 900 points in 107 games for the Chiefs and has an 89.1 career field goal percentage.
