Kansas City Chiefs made Creed Humphrey highest paid center

The Kansas City Chiefs gave another one of their star players a well-deserved payday last Thursday during the team’s third and final preseason matchup.

Creed Humphrey became the highest-paid center in the NFL after inking a four-year extension worth $72 million, including $50 million in guarantees.

On Monday, the Shawnee, Oklahoma native, addressed the media and spoke about staying in Kansas City for the foreseeable future.

“I’m in the perfect situation for me,” Humphrey began. “I’m playing in a place that I get to call home. And it’s been awesome to call home the past four years, and I’ve really enjoyed it. So getting this opportunity is awesome.” He explained.

“The guys around [here] coaching staff, everything is top-notch getting to play with [Patrick Mahomes], things like that, the whole situation is perfect for me, so I’m really happy to be here.”

When the Chiefs drafted him as the 63rd overall pick in 2021, Humphrey wasn’t expected to start. Instead, he played backup to Austin Blythe during OTAs and training camp. By the start of the regular season, Humphrey won the starting job and anchored Kansas City’s offensive line for the last four seasons. During his rookie campaign, the spotlight quickly shined on Humphrey as the best center in the NFL.

Since being drafted, he’s helped Kansas City reach four AFC Championships and win two Super Bowls. Now that he’s got the contract stuff figured out, Humphrey said his focus is back to helping the Chiefs become the first franchise to win three consecutive Lombardi trophies

“Yeah, for me, I never really thought about it. I’ve just tried to stay focused on the ball, and that’s how I’ve approached this whole thing, to stay focused on football and proving what I can every day,” said Humphrey. “So, it was never really something that I was too busy straining, thinking over too much.”

Humphrey and the Chiefs quest for the three-peat behind on September 5 when they kick off the 2024 NFL regular season against the Baltimore Ravens.
