Injury Report: Lucas Niang and Rashad Fenton return to practice

The Kansas City Chiefs revealed the Wednesday portion of their Week 14 injury report leading up to their matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders. The biggest news is right tackle Lucas Niang and cornerback Rashad Fenton made it back onto the practice field after being absent in Kansas City’s win over Denver last Sunday night.

“They’re gonna try it this week and get some work,” said Chiefs head coach Andy Reid. “We’ll just see how they do… they’re going to practice. They’re going to work it out.”

Fenton strained his knee back in Week 11 against the Dallas Cowboys right before the team’s bye week, and Niang hasn’t seen the field since suffering a rib injury in Week 9 against the Green Bay Packers.

Fenton is in the midst of a break-out season, catching the attention of Pro Football Focus, who has graded him amongst some of the top corners in the NFL like Jalen Ramsey of the L.A. Rams. Trough 10 games before getting injured,  Fenton has 33 tackles, a 67.7 completion percentage allowed and averages 7.7 yards per reception allowed.

Niang began the 2021 season as the Chiefs’ starter at right tackle before getting benched after the first five games in favor of Mike Remmers. The rookie regained his starting job for two games when Remmers got hurt, and before getting injured himself, it appeared the right tackle potion was Niang’s job to lose. The TCU product attempted to return to practice last week before sitting out the rest of the week leading up the game against the Denver Broncos.

While Remmers and Niang were both out of action, veteran Andrew Wylie has stepped in at right tackle and has gradually improved each week. In Week 10, he allowed nine pressures against the Raiders, six pressures the following week against Dallas, and just one pressure last Sunday against Denver.

“We look at Andrew like a starter,” said Reid. “Right? I mean, that’s how we do with him and some of the other guys really, that whole second group has started in this league, so we have no problem putting guys in. Somebody gets hurt or whatever, we have full confidence that they’ll go in and play well.”

An impressive aspect of Wylie’s game is how he’s found success outside of his more natural position at left guard.

“Andrew competes, and he’s going to fight you,” said Reid. “And [right tackle’s] probably not his natural position. His natural position is probably more inside than outside, but he doesn’t blink at it.”

The team added that special teams ace Chris Lammons is expected to miss time with a high-ankle sprain. Reid mentioned during his presser that practice squad player Josh Jackson could fill the role on Sunday.
