How the Chiefs can clinch their fifth consecutive AFC West title

Heading into the final stretch of the 2020 NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs are on pace to finish with the best regular-season record in franchise history. This year’s club is just two victories away from tying the franchise’s highest single-season win total of 13 games, accomplished in 1995, 1997, and 2003.

Sitting at 11-1 on the year and already in the playoffs, the team has their eyes set on the top seed in the AFC. But first, they must lock up their own division for a franchise-best fifth straight season.

For Kansas City to win the AFC West, it’s pretty simple.

One of the following two scenarios must happen for the Chiefs to win the division crown:

  1. KC WIN or TIE (vs MIA) OR
  2. LV LOSS or TIE (vs IND)

The last time the Chiefs played in Miami, they won Super Bowl LIV. This week, they’ll have a chance to lock up the division with a win over the Miami Dolphins (8-4). However, if the ‘Phins are able to pull off the upset, the Chiefs can still win the West with some help from an old division foe.

If fate doesn’t fall into Kansas City’s favor on Sunday, then all eyes will be on Colts quarterback Phillip Rivers to knock off the Raiders in Las Vegas.

Like I said, pretty simple.

Though, I’m sure Head Coach Andy Reid would prefer his Chiefs stay in control of their own destiny rather than receive help from other clubs around the league.

Another key game to watch will be the Sunday night matchup between the Pittsburgh Steelers (11-1) and the Buffalo Bills (9-3). If Josh Allen and Co. can beat Big Ben and the surging Steelers, then a win over Miami will put the Chiefs in the driver’s seat for the top seed in the AFC playoff bracket.

With only four weeks left in the 2020 regular season, a huge shakeup in the AFC playoff race could be on the horizon.

Stay tuned.
