GM Brett Veach discusses Chiefs’ approach to draft-day challenges

Brett Veach

As the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine kicks off, the focus turns to evaluating the next class of rookies ready to enter the league. For the Kansas City Chiefs, this year’s draft presents another challenge: selecting late due to their consistent postseason success. With the Chiefs’ 31st overall pick in the first round, general manager Brett Veach shared insights on how the team approaches late-round selections during his press conference on Tuesday.

Late Picks and the Challenge of Success

Veach acknowledged the difficulty of drafting near the end of each round, explaining that success comes with its own set of challenges. “The more you win, the harder it’s supposed to be,” Veach said, emphasizing how tough it is to find impactful talent late in the draft when the team already boasts top-tier players at many positions. He continued, “When you have a bunch of guys who are at the top of the market for their position, and you pick last or close to last every year, it becomes very challenging.”

Despite these challenges, Veach remains confident in the Chiefs’ ability to find gems in the later rounds. The team has a strong track record of uncovering valuable players in the draft’s later stages, such as running back Isiah Pacheco and offensive lineman Trey Smith, both of whom made significant contributions to the team’s success.

Thinking Outside the Box

With the Chiefs selecting 31st overall in the upcoming draft, Veach emphasized the importance of creativity in their approach. “We just have to think outside the box and put some creative plans together,” he said. This forward-thinking mindset is essential for the Chiefs as they aim to continue building a strong roster, even when selecting late in the draft order.

Looking Ahead to the 2025 Draft

As the 2025 NFL Draft approaches, the Chiefs will once again rely on their scouting department’s ability to identify talent that can contribute immediately. Despite the challenges of drafting late, Veach’s experience and strategic thinking will be key in ensuring the Chiefs continue to build on their championship pedigree.

The 2025 NFL Draft offers the Chiefs another opportunity to find valuable contributors, and with their proven ability to scout late-round talent, fans can expect Kansas City to make the most of its late pick.
