Free-agent OL Andrew Wylie re-signs with Kansas City

So far, the Kansas City Chiefs have spent the early portion of free agency bringing back in-house players on the open market. Shortly after the start of the 2022 League Year at 3 p.m. central, Pro Football Focus’ Ari Meirov reported the team brought back offensive lineman Andrew Wylie on Wednesday afternoon.

Wylie and the Chiefs agreed on a one-year deal worth $2.5 million. In his fourth season in 2021, Wylie stepped in at the right tackle when Lucas Niang and Mike Remmers were sidelined due to injury. Appearing in 13 games and making seven starts at the position.

Before finding his place in Kansas City, Wylie entered the league in 2017 with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted player out of Eastern Michigan. After the Ravens waived him, he bounced the practice squads of the Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns, and the Los Angeles Chargers before landing on Kansas City’s practice squad to end the 2017 campaign.

Since the 2018 season, Wylie has played in 54 regular-season games and made 42 starts. The 27-year-old has proven to be a really versatile player that can play anywhere along the o-line, which is why the Chiefs really like having him on the depth chart and is likely a contributing reason the team decided to bring him back. Wylie has lined up at left guard, right guard, and right tackle over the last four seasons for Kansas City.

With multiple teams in the AFC stacking their defensive lines this offseason, adding as much depth to the o-line to protect Patrick Mahomes has to be at the top of the minds inside the Chiefs’ front office.
