Former Chief Bernard Pollard attempting NFL comeback

At the young age of 36, former Kansas City Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard announced on Twitter that he’s coming out of retirement and attempting a comeback to the NFL. A second-round draft selection from 2006, Pollard spent the first three seasons of his NFL career in Kansas City under former head coach Herman Edwards before his release from the team in 2009.

Pollard spent eight seasons in the NFL before taking his final snaps as a member of the Tennessee Titans in 2014. Since his retirement, Pollard seemed to have faded into the sunset as he embarked on future endeavors. Until Feb 26, 2021, that is, where he announced on his personal Twitter account that he plans to make it back onto an NFL roster.

Since then, Pollard’s released various workout videos over the previous month including the ones below which are from a few days ago.

While it’s unclear what kind of interest the former safety is attracting from teams, if there is any, he does claim he’s spoken to Brett Veach and Company in Kansas City on Tuesday, March 30.

Veteran players coming out of retirement isn’t exactly an uncommon phenomenon these days, especially, if the league decides to expand the practice squad roster for veteran players like they did last season due to the pandemic. After all, we’ve already seen guys such as Rob Gronkowski make a successful return to the NFL.

Wide receiver Dez Bryant also came out of retirement with the Baltimore Ravens in 2020 after being out of football for two whole seasons. Additionally, the Chiefs recently signed tackle Kyle Long is also a veteran player who is coming out of retirement.

In his heyday, Pollard was known for his physical and punishing style of play, standing at 6-foot-2 inches and 225 pounds. In his final season with the Chiefs, Pollard led the team in tackles but wasn’t kept on the roster going into the 2009 campaign. The following two seasons were spent as a member of the Houston Texans before moving onto Baltimore in 2011 and helping the Ravens win Super Bowl 47 in 2012. The following year, Pollard was picked up by the Tennessee Titans, where he’d eventually retire at the end of the 2014 campaign.
