Former 49ers assistant Katie Sowers to join Chiefs this offseason

The Kansas City Chiefs added another assistant coach to their coaching staff on Wednesday afternoon. Former San Francisco 49ers assistant Katie Sowers announced on her personal Instagram that she’ll be coaching with the Chiefs this offseason.

Sowers, 34, is the second assistant football coach to announce themselves as a Chiefs’ Bill Walsh diversity coaching fellow this week. The former Kansas native is also the second-ever female coach to ever hold a full-time coaching position in the NFL.

Sowers wrote the following message on her Instagram:

“Retired from coaching in the NFL? Nah, Kansas City.. I’m home! Huge thanks to the Chiefs organization for believing in me and providing me another opportunity to grow my coaching experience while learning from the best in the game through the Bill Walsh Diversity fellowship. Let’s keep growing the game. See you this summer, chiefs kingdom.”

Growing up in Hesston, Kansas, Sowers attended the University of Central Missouri and was a player in the Women’s Football Alliance for eight seasons as a member of the West Michigan  Mayhem and Kansas City Titans as a quarterback and defensive back.

In 2013, she was selected as a member of the U.S.A.’s Women’s National Football Team that won the International Federation of American Football Women’s world championship.

As an NFL assistant, Sowers spent the majority of her time with the 49ers as an offensive assistant from 2017-2020. In 2016, she spent time in Atlanta as a training camp assistant for the Falcons.
