Could Sammy Watkins be on his way out of K.C.?

One month and two days ago, Sammy Watkins balled out in Super Bowl LIV, out sprinting San Francisco cornerback Richard Sherman to catch five receptions for 98 yards to help the Chiefs win their first title since 1969.

Watkins has been a key contributor for Kansas City’s offense in 2019 but as the off-season closes in, speculation continues to suggest with each passing day that the former 4th overall pick could be on his way out of Kansas City.

While many fans are hoping Watkins restructures his contract to stay with the Chiefs in 2020, but the 26-year old receiver could have other plans in mind following this tweet.

Watkins is due to make $21 million in 2020 and the Chiefs could save as much as $14 million by cutting him.

General Manager Brett Veach told reporters during the combine last week that the team ‘made it clear’ to Watkins they want him to return for the upcoming season. Which sent positive vibes within the team’s fanbase that a restructured agreement between the two sides would get done in the near future.

However, following Watkins’ tweet on Twitter, it seems either the two sides can’t agree on a new contract or Watkins has no desire to restructure with the Chiefs at all and may go where the money takes him.

Coming fresh off a Super Bowl victory, there will be plenty of suitors for Watkins if the Chiefs cut him. One destination could be Houston, where star receiver Deandre Hopkins is already calling for a reunion with his former teammate from Clemson.

Watkins has played for four different teams since getting in 2014 by the Buffalo Bills and it seems like he could be heading to his fifth unless Veach and Watkins’ representatives agree on a deal that keeps him in Kansas City.

In 2019, Watkins’ played in 14 games, caught 52 passes for 673 yards and three touchdowns. His best game came in Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars where he caught 9 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns.
