Chiefs’ WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling has new level of respect for Mahomes after fighting through illness in Week 8 loss

Shortly before the Kansas City Chiefs took to the field for their annual road matchup with the Denver Broncos, quarterback Patrick Mahomes surprisingly popped up on the team’s injury report with an illness. Reportedly, Mahomes caused the flu bug from his children a few days before the game and was still fighting the illness prior to kickoff.

While Kansas City’s 24-9 can blamed on a number of factors, Mahomes being under the weather didn’t help, along with a number of other circumstances that led to the Chiefs’ falling to 6-2 on the season. The two-time Super Bowl champion finished the game on Sunday, completing 24 of 38 passes for 241 yards and two interceptions.

Despite not feeling well, Mahomes’ facial expressions gave no indication that he was fighting an illness at all, which impressed wide receiver Marquez Vales-Scantling, who praised his QB’s toughness after the game on Sunday.

“[Patrick Mahomes] is a competitor,” Valdes-Scantling told reporters. “He can have no legs and still try to run around and throw the football. As long as he can suit up, he’s going to be out there. He’s out there for a reason. We got the utmost confidence that he’s going to go out there and give it his all, and that’s what he did today.”

Mahomes has built a reputation for being incredibly resilient when confronted with adversity, and Sunday would be another example of it.
