Chiefs work out ex-Chargers kicker following Butker injury

The Kansas City Chiefs start the season 1-0 for the eighth consecutive season following a 44-24 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. But the Chiefs aren’t leaving without their share of bumps and bruises.

One of those was kicker Harrison Butker, who planted his left foot awkwardly, causing him to slip and twist it on the kicking-off following Travis Kelce’s touchdown catch on the Chiefs’ opening drive.

Butker left the game early, spending a brief time in the locker room before returning to the field, kicking a 54-yard field goal right before halftime and sending through four PATs in the second half. Butker likely won’t see the field again until he gets a clean bill of health from the team doctors.

According to the team’s injury report, Butker did not practice on Monday, and there’s a possibility the Chiefs might be without of the elite kickers in the NFL when they face the Chargers in three days. With such uncertainty, the Chiefs worked out free agent placekicker Tristan Vizcaino on Monday, per NFL reporter Aaron Wilson.

Vizcaino, 26, went undrafted in 2019 and spent time with the Bengals, Cowboys, Vikings, 49ers, Bills, Chargers, and Patriots, mostly bouncing from practice squad to practice squad. However, he appeared in 7 total games, one with San Francisco (2020) and six with the Chargers (2021). While in San Fran, Vizcaino made his lone field goal attempt from 47 yards out and was three-for-three in extra-points attempts. In Los Angles, he made six-of-seven field goals, the longest from 46 yards, and was 10-of-15 on PATs.
