Chiefs waive Montrell Washington and Keondre Coburn

The Kansas City Chiefs made a couple of roster moves on Thursday, per the NFL’s transaction report.

In order to make space for defensive end Charles Omenihu and wide receiver Mecole Hardman, the Chiefs waived rookie defensive tackle Keodre Coburn and second-year WR Montrell Washington.

Kansas City will be able to sign both players back to the practice squad should they clear the waiver wire. Coburn was drafted by the Chiefs as a sixth-round draft pick last spring while Washington was a preseason season pickup during final cuts in late August. Washington was activated from the practice squad on September 27 to serve as the Chiefs’ return specialist after Richie James was lost for the season due to injury.

Omenihu returns to the Chiefs after serving a six-game suspension and will likely make his regular-season debut with the Chiefs on Sunday when they host the Los Angeles Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium.

Kansas City welcomes back a familiar face in Mecole Hardman, who returns to the Chiefs via trade from the New York Jets. Hardman will finally have a chance to make some noise on the field after falling down New York’s depth chart to begin his 2023 campaign.

The release of Washington also hints that Hardman could play on Sunday and have his old job back as Kansas City’s return man.
