Chiefs trade with Cowboys for tight end Peyton Hendershot

The Kansas City Chiefs made a collection of roster moves this week as they trimmed their locker room down from 90 players to 53. One of those moves was a trade with the Dallas Cowboys for tight end Peyton Hendershot in exchange for a late-round conditional draft pick in 2026.

The move replaces Irv Smith Jr., whom the Chiefs released during final cuts this week. Kansas City is back to four tight ends on the roster as Hendershot joins Travis Kelce, Noah Gray, and Jared Wiley on the active roster to begin the season.

Hendershot entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Indiana in 2022. In a change twist of fate, Hendershot originally worked out a contract to sign with the Chiefs two seasons prior, but opted to join the Dallas Cowboys at the last minute.

While in Jerry World, Hendershot appeared in 25 games over two seasons, catching 15 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns.

Last season, he only played in eight games and caught just four balls for 38 yards.

Hendershot gives Kansas City depth at the tight end spot, but he should see some playing this year since Andy Reid loves using multiple tight end sets. General Manager Brett Veach also mentioned that he’d have opportunities to contribute on special teams as well.

“Well, I think when you get to the final touches of a 53-man roster, I think you’re looking for special teams,” Chiefs GM Brett Veach told reporters on Thursday. “I think (Peyton) Hendershot’s played tons special teams reps there. So, if you don’t get it all the time from that running back position, you have to get it from somewhere else. And we have a good linebacking core, it would be good to do more at that tight end position (on special teams).”
