Chiefs trade Rashad Fenton, activate McDuffie

The Kansas City Chiefs made a few moves before the trade deadline on Tuesday afternoon. However, they did not make any moves to bring in a big-name player that could be a key contributor as the team prepares for the second half of the regular season.

After acquiring wideout Kadarius Toney from the New York Giants last week, the Chiefs made one more small trade by casting cornerback Rashad Fenton away to Atlanta in exchange for a conditional seventh-round draft pick.

The move frees up approximately $1.49 million in cap space and opens up a spot on the active roster for rookie Trent McDuffie, who is returning from injured reserve.

Following the trade, the Chiefs announced on their official Twitter page they’ve officially activated McDuffie to the active roster.

Fenton getting traded away for little compensation sends a strong message of how much they like and trust their core of rookie cornerbacks. They also might have viewed the trade deadline as an opportunity to free up a spot and get something for a guy they obviously weren’t committed to.

Fenton was a sixth-round pick by the Chiefs in 2019 and played in a total of 47 games, starting 16 of them, and finishes his Chiefs tenor with 123 tackles and two interceptions.

McDuffie finally returns to the Chiefs after sustaining an ankle injury in the first game of the regular season. Kansas City could’ve activated their first-round draft pick two weeks earlier, but head coach Andy Reid wanted to wait til after the bye before allowing McDuffie back onto the field.

McDuffie being back on the active roster indicates that he will play in Week 8 against the Tennessee Titans.
