Chiefs to sign safety Justin Reid

General Manager Brett Veach has made his first free-agent signing of 2022. NFL Insider Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero report the Chiefs have signed safety Justin Reid to a three-year deal worth $31.5 million with $20 million in guarantees.

Reid, 25, spent the last four seasons of his NFL career with the Houston Texans as a 2018 third-round draft pick. In 2021, the product from Stanford was one of Houston’s top defenders, accounting for 66 tackles (44 solo) and two interceptions in 13 regular season starts.

The move to get Reid likely replaces All-Pro Tyrann Mathieu, who’s expected to move on from Kansas City this offseason. Meanwhile, the Chiefs get a younger player to team up with former second-round pick Jaun Thornhill next season.

In 53 total starts, Reid registered 315 tackles (230 solo), 11 tackles for loss, two sacks, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, 23 passes defended, and seven interceptions.
