Chiefs to let Darrel Williams walk into free agency

The ground attack for the Kansas City Chiefs will look drastically different for the upcoming season compared to seasons past as a fan favorite will be heading for greener pastures.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports running back Darrel Williams will be testing the free-agent market rather than returning to Kansas City on Monday. General Manager Brett Veach and the Chiefs reportedly tried to retain Williams before today’s negotiating window. However, the two sides couldn’t reach an agreement.

Williams entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and slowly worked his way onto the active roster and up the Chiefs’ depth chart. 2021 was a career year for him as he rushed for 558 yards and six touchdowns on 144 carries. He was also a receiving threat out of the backfield with 47 receptions for 452 yards and two scores.

It’s possible Williams is looking to profit off his career year, and it’s a number the Chiefs aren’t willing to shell out. Now, he’ll go to the open market, and if there’s a team, that will.
