Chiefs sign XFL’s Ta’amu

The Kansas City Chiefs have added another quarterback to compete with Chad Henne and Kyle Shurmer for the backup roles behind Patrick Mahomes.

The team has announced the addition of XFL quarterback Jordan Ta’amu of the St. Louis Battlehawks on Monday evening.

Ta’amu was an undrafted player from Ole Miss who signed with the Houston Texans at the start of the 2019 pre-season on August 7 but was cut 23 days later on August 30 during the team’s final cuts.

On October 15, 2019, Ta’amu got a second chance to play pro football when he was allocated to the XFL as the first player of the St. Louis Battlehawks and was named their starting quarterback for the 2020 season. Ta’amu played all five games for the ‘hawks before the XFL season was cut short due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Before the season was suspended, he completed 72-percent of his passes for 1,050 yards and 5 touchdowns to 2 interceptions. Good enough to lead St. Louis to a 3-2 record to tie with the D.C. Defenders and N.Y. Guardians for the lead in the XFL Eastern Conference.

Ta’amu’s strong performance in the XFL has earned him a second chance to compete for a spot at the NFL level and will likely go against Kyler Shurmer for the third-string quarterback job. He is also the second XFL quarterback to be signed by an NFL team after Houston Roughnecks standout passer P.J. Walker signed with the Carolina Panthers.
