Chiefs sign two former CFL players and re-sign tight end

On Monday, the Kansas City Chiefs were busy adding three players to their 2022 off-season roster. The team reportedly signed Lee Summit native and standout Missouri Western defensive back Brandin Dandridge to Reserve/Futures after getting released from the CFL’s Ottawa Redblacks.

Dandridge was part of the group Kansas City hosted last week for a workout at Arrowhead Stadium. That group included Missouri standout Shane Ray and wide receiver Justin Watson, who signed with the Chiefs last Friday.

Per the NFL’s transaction report, the Chiefs added former CFL defensive end Jonathan Woodard, to Reserve/Futures. Woodard, 28, previously spent time with the Saskatchewan Roughriders before coming to Kansas City.

Woodard’s pro football career began as a seventh-round draft in 2016 by the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, he suffered a torn Achilles injury that summer and spent his rookie season on the Jags’ Reserve/PUP list. In 2017, he failed to make Jacksonville’s roster and wound up getting picked up off waivers by Atlanta.

By the end of the ‘17 season, Woodard was in Miami and bounced between the Dolphins’ practice and active roster, playing six games in 2018 and registering ten tackles and a sack. After spending the ‘19 season on injured reserve after getting hurt again during training camp, Woodard was released and signed to Buffalo’s practice squad in 2020 but failed to make the Bills’ roster.

Woodard finally got his chance in Canada, signing with Saskatchewan in May 2021, playing 14 games and wracking up 22 tackles and ten sacks.

Finally, Kansas City also brought back tight end Nakia Griffin-Stewart, who spent the second half of the 2021 season on the Chiefs’practice squad, appearing in two games.

These signings bring the Chiefs at 55 players on their roster and leave approximately $3.9 million in cap space, according to Spotrac.com.
