Chiefs sign OL Stefen Wisniewski

General Manager Brett Veach isn’t done sending in reinforcements to help fill the holes left by the injuries sustained in Kansas City’s previous game. Moments after signing veteran defensive tackle Terrell McClain, it’s been announced that the Chiefs have signed interior offensive lineman Stefen Wisniewski, who’ll to likely fill the hole at left guard.

Kansas City lost starting left guard Andrew Wylie to an ankle injury against the Colts last Sunday night and Kansas City obviously needed a viable replacement since they released Jeff Allen to make way for cornerback Morris Claiborne last Saturday and backup Ryan Hunter didn’t fit the bill on Sunday night when his number was called.

Wisniewski was drafted in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders and was a familiar foe to Kansas City for the first four seasons of his career, primarily playing center on the Raiders offensive line.

In 2015, the Raiders allowed Wisniewski to walk in free agency to sign a one-year contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars with whom, he started all 16 games.

On April 4, 2016, Wisniewski signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles and played in all 16 games and started 6.

In 2017, he was given a three-extension and was named the Eagles starting left guard. Wisniewski started 11 of 14 regular-season games played and helped protect quarterback Nick Foles during the Eagles playoff run to win Super Bowl LII over the New England Patriots.

In 2018, Wisniewski began the season as the Eagles starting left guard but was eventually benched in favor of Isaac Seumalo. However, he returned as the starter for the last three games of the season when Seumalo went down with a pectoral injury.

For 2019, Philadelphia decided to decline Wisniewski’s team option on his contract, thus, making him an unrestricted free agent on March 11. On May 13, the Eagles re-signed Wisniewski only to release him during final cuts on August 31.

Wisniewski originally received interest from the Chiefs back in 2015 during the free agency period of that offseason. However, nothing escalated from there and no talks were had at the time.

The move to add Wisniewski brings experience and a certain toughness to the offensive line and personally, I like the move. Hopefully, he can get acquainted with his new team and get enough of the playbook down in time to help protect Patrick Mahomes from the likes of J.J. Watt next week and maybe even help get the running game going.
