Chiefs sign OL Bryan Witzmann, Keizer retires

The Kansas City Chiefs made a couple of roster transactions on Sunday following practice at Missouri Western State University in St. Joe.

The Chiefs announced tight end Nick Keizer has been placed on the Reserve/Retired list and have signed offensive lineman Bryan Witzmann to fill in the void left on the roster.

Kiezer, 26, first entered the league in 2018 with the Baltimore Ravens before finding his way to Kansas City the following season. In 2020, Keizer made the Chiefs’ active roster and made his NFL debut on September 10, 2020, against the Houston Texans, where he served as the second tight end and made a tackle on special teams.

In Week 6 against the Buffalo Bills, Keizer made his first career reception for a gain of two yards. Keizer finished the season with six catches for 63 yards.

Going into this season, Keizer began camp with a back issue but was having a fine camp despite that. However, with the return of veteran Blake Bell and the addition of rookie Noah Gray, the writing was on the wall that his days with the team were most likely numbered.

After placing offensive lineman Darryl Williams on their COVID-19 list and filling Keizer’s spot, the Chiefs decided to bring back a familiar face in veteran OL Bryan Witzmann. Witzmann was spotted working with the other lineman during Sunday’s practice.

This is technically his third stint with the Chiefs. Bryan Witzmann was brought to the practice squad on October 28, 2020. He was elevated to the active roster on November 7 and 11, during Kansas City Week 9 and 11 contests with the Carolina Panthers and Las Vegas Raiders, in which he totaled for three special teams snaps and was demoted to the practice squad after both games.

On February 9, he signed a futures-reserved contract with the team but the Chiefs released him a few months later on May 10.

He also spent the 2016 and 2017 campaigns in Kansas City as well.
