Chiefs sign long snapper, release WR

As the remaining members of Kansas City’s 90-man roster reported to Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri for training camp on Monday, the Chiefs’ front office made a few tweaks to the roster.

The Chiefs took to its official Twitter account to officially announced the signing of defensive end Alex Okafor, as well as the addition of long snapper, Drew Scott and the release of wide receiver Chris Finke.

The Okafor signing was initially reported earlier last week, the team just couldn’t make the move official until they made the required adjustments to add him to the roster.

Okafor will be taking the place of former Notre Dame wide receiver Chris Finke, who signed with Kansas City back in May. Finke originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the San Francisco 49ers last season, where he spent the majority of the 2020 NFL season on the team’s practice squad.

Lastly, the Chiefs’ front office added 26-year-old long snapper Drew Scott in response to placing veteran long snapper James Winchester was placed on the COVID reserve list.

Scott spent his collegiate career inside of the Chiefs Kingdom, playing for the Kansas State Wildcats from 2013 through 2017. Scott entered the league as an undrafted free agent where he spent time with Las Vegas Raiders and Dallas Cowboys during both club’s training camps, respectively, in 2018 and 2019. He failed to make either team’s roster after final cuts.

At first, many had speculated the Scott signing was to add competition since Winchester was going into his seventh season in the NFL (all with the Chiefs), and the 31-year-old is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in 2022.

Shortly after the signing, Matt Derrick of Chiefs Digest reports the real reason Kansas City added a long snapper was because they placed Winchester on the COVID-19 reserve list.

The move to get Scott balances the Chiefs’ 90-man off-season roster going into training camp.
