Chiefs sign linebacker and special teamer Elijah Lee

Linebacker Elijah Lee is coming home!

The Blue Springs native has agreed to a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday afternoon, per Kansas City Star’s Herbie Teope.

After spending four seasons at Kansas State, Lee went to the NFL as a seventh-round draft pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 2017. After not making the Vikings’ final roster, he landed on the practice squad of the San Francisco 49ers. In 2018, he made the active roster and played all 16 games for the 49ers, making a career-high 65 tackles.

In 2019, he made two tackles against the Chiefs in Super Bowl 54 while on special teams.

In 2020 he signed with the Detroit Lions before getting picked up off waivers by the Cleveland Browns, where he spent the rest of 2020 and all of 2021 as a special teams player. Lee had 321 special teams snaps for the Browns last season and 73 snaps on defense at linebacker.

Lee is the kind of player who will fit in with Dave Toub’s special teams unit. In five NFL seasons, he’s taken more snaps as a contributor on special teams than he has as a defensive player. According to Pro Football Reference, Lee’s taken 1,096 special teams snaps and 608 on defense (476 snaps were taken in 2018 alone).

His special teams background should help him earn a roster spot with the Chiefs in 2022. He could also be seen competing for a spot as a linebacker. In 66 regular-season games, Lee has registered 99 tackles and one sack.
