Chiefs sign kicker Matt Ammendola

Tom Pelissero reports the Kansas City Chiefs have found their insurance kicker in case Harrison Butker won’t be available for Thursday night against the Chargers.

Butker injured his ankle on the ensuing kickoff following Kansas City’s touchdown on their opening drive. As he was about to make the kick, Butker’s left ankle (plant football) slipped and twisted in an awkward direction, causing the injury.

On Monday, the Chiefs held a six-man kicker derby that included Cameron Dicker, Elliott Fry, Chase McLaughlin, Cody Parkey, and Tristan Vizcaino. Ultimately, the Chiefs decided on former New York Jets kicker Matt Ammendola.

Ammendola, 25, played just one season in the NFL since going undrafted out of Oklahoma State in 2020. In 2021, he appeared in 11 games for New York, making 13 of 19 field goal attempts and 14 for 15 on extra points. On field goals between 40 and 49 yards, Ammendola was 2 for 5; on field goals of 50+ yards, he was 0 for 3.

His career longest make is 49 yards.
