Chiefs sign DT Mike Pennel

Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach is bringing the band back together by signing another member who helped the team with Super Bow 54 at the end of the 2019 NFL season. As the team prepares for their second meeting against the Denver Broncos, the Chiefs signed defensive tackle Mike Pennel to the practice squad, per the NFL’s transaction report.

Pennel is familiar with Kansas City, having played 22 total games with the club in 2019-20 and recording 53 tackles and a sack. The 32-year-old Topeka native was originally an undrafted free agent in 2014 before signing with the Packers and spending the first three seasons of his journeyman career in Green Bay before serving a two-year stint with the Jets. He signed the Chiefs as a mid-season pickup in 2019 and helped the club go on two Super Bowl runs.

Since leaving the Chiefs, Pennel spent the 2021 campaign with the Atlanta Falcons, registering 21 tackles in ten games. The following season, Chicago picked him up and totaled 26 tackles and two QB hits.
Kansas City opened a spot for Pennel by releasing wide receiver Daniel Arias from the practice squad.
