Chiefs sign defensive end Taco Charlton to a one-year deal

The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to bring in defensive lineman Taco Charlton on a one-year contract per Terez Paylor of Yahoo! Sports.

Charlton, 25, was drafted 28th overall by the Dallas Cowboys in 2017 from the University of Michigan. At 6-foot-6-inches and 270-pounds, he was the seventh defensive end taken in the draft that year.

He spent his rookie season as a backup behind defensive ends DeMarcus Lawrence and Tyrone Crawford in a reserve role and finished the 2017 season with 19 tackles and three sacks.

In 2018, he was the Cowboys’ starting defensive end opposite DeMarcus Lawrence for the first sevens game before getting substituted in passing downs and eventually fell back into a reserve role. He finished his ‘18 campaign with 27 tackles and a sack.

In 2019, Dallas waived Charlton on September 18, 2019, and got picked up by the Miami Dolphins a day later.

While in Miami, he played 10 games, starting five, and registered 21 tackles. He also finished as the team’s sack leader with five sacks but despite that, Charlton was waived by the Dolphins on April 30, 2020.

He now joins the Chiefs, where he’ll add depth to the defensive line behind starters Frank Clark and Alex Okafor and will compete with pass rushers Mike Dana, Tanoh Kpassagnon, and Breeland Speaks for a backup role in Steve Spagnuolo’s defense.
