Chiefs select RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire at 32nd overall

THE PICK IS IN!

Kansas City Chiefs selects LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire at 32nd overall.

At 5-feet-7-inches and 207-pounds, Edwards-Helaire ran 4.6s 40-time at the NFL combine and was compared to former Chiefs running back Priest Holmes by NFL Network analyst David Jeremiah because of his ability to catch out of the backfield and similarities when running with the football.

Since the majority of Kansas City’s running backs are set to become free agents at the end of 2020 (except for Darwin Thompson), the Chiefs have their back of the future who is fast, built low to the ground which makes him tough to tackle, and has the ability to shift and turn on a dime.

In three seasons at LSU, Edwards-Helaire rushed for 2,103 yards and 23 touchdowns on 370 carries. He had his best season in 2019, rushing for 1,414 yards and 16 touchdowns as the Tigers went a perfect 15-0 on their way to beat Clemson in the National Championship.

During his final season in college, Edwards-Helaire showed how big of a threat he can be in the passing game with 55 receptions for 453 yards and a score.

He also displayed his ability as a kick returner 40 returns for 877 yards in three seasons and will absolutely be an excellent addition in Dave Toub’s special team’s group.

The selection of Clyde Edwards-Helaire is the first pick the Chiefs have made in the first round since they traded up to pick quarterback Patrick Mahomes 10th overall in 2017.

Kansas City will not pick again until the end of the second round at 63rd overall unless they happen to trade of down. The second round of the 2020 NFL Draft will begin at 7 p.m. Eastern tomorrow night and will immediately be followed up by the third round.
