Chiefs select C Creed Humphrey with the 63rd pick

At 63rd overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs selected offensive lineman Creed Humphrey from the University of Oklahoma.

Humphrey played three seasons on the offensive line at Oklahoma, primarily playing from the center position. At 6-feet-5-inches and 320-pounds, Humphrey is a big guy who has outstanding movement skills and is able to get out in front quickly and effortlessly.

As a former wrestler, Humphrey possesses good core strength and is able to hold up against the point of attack. During his three years with the Sooners, Humphry called the protection schemes on the o-line and showed a good football IQ. His wrestling background also gives him the ability to mirror engaged rushers and keep them within his body frame.

Light on his feet, Humphrey is agile enough to be able to stay on his feet when working against a defensive end or a pass-rushing linebacker.

On the downside, Humphrey does not have a powerful base and struggles to drive guys off the ball during run plays. There are times where he may struggle with taking the appropriate angles when pulling and sometimes can completely overrun a linebacker or defensive back. He does not have a finisher’s mentality like a typical offensive lineman would and struggles to hold his own against guys that he’s blocking.

During the Senior Bowl, Humphrey got blown off the ball on almost every snap he took and wasn’t turning many heads against a variety of competition. In the run game, he struggled to latch onto certain defenders while others just bounce off of him and make a tackle in the backfield.

Overall, Humphrey has the potential to provide excellent depth and could become a quality starter for Kansas City. Although he isn’t much of a mauler and will need time to develop, Humphrey has the physical tools and football smarts to be a guy who’ll be protecting Patrick Mahomes for a long time down the stretch.
