Chiefs release linebacker Elijah Lee, sign DT

The Kansas City Chiefs have opened up a spot on their 53-man active roster on Tuesday afternoon, releasing linebacker Elijah Lee, per the league’s official transactions report.

Lee, 26, has played all three regular-season games for Kansas City thus far this year. He is now a free agent but can return to the team’s practice squad if no other offers come his way. He totaled just four combined tackles and logged 66 snaps on special teams.

Lee was signed by the Chiefs on March 24 and was the team’s starter during the preseason but was waived during final cuts. The following day, he was signed to KC’s practice squad and elevated to the active roster on September 10.

Lee’s release and the four-game suspension of starter Willie Gay Jr. leave the Chiefs severely short at the linebacker position (four). Making it very plausible Kansas City picks up a viable option to start alongside Nick Bolton until Gay returns.

Kansas City also signed defensive tackle Cortez Broughton to its practice squad unit. Broughton, 26, was on Kansas City’s practice squad last season and made a single appearance during the 2021 campaign. Early offseason, Broughton signed a futures/reserve contract with the Chiefs and spent the entire past spring with the team until he failed a physical on July 27, leading to his initial release during training camp.
