Chiefs release DT Danny Shelton, bring back Rush

The Kansas City Chiefs made a roster move on Tuesday evening, according to the NFL’s transaction report.

Per the report, the Chiefs have terminated defensive tackle Danny Shelton’s practice squad contract, making him a free agent. In his place, Kansas City has brought back defensive back Darius Ruch, who had been waived from the team on September 16.

Shelton, 30, entered the league in 2015 and has bounced around the league, spending time with the Browns, Patriots, Lions, and Giants before joining the Chiefs on August 15, 2022. Shelton spent last season on Kansas City’s practice squad and was offered a reserve/futures contract to return to the team. Although he showed some flashes in camp and during preseason, he failed to make the active roster during final cuts but was brought back to the practice squad.

This time, Shelton’s season with the Chiefs has been cut short in favor of a younger prospect.
Darius Rush, 23, is off to a crazy start to his NFL career after being drafted by the Indianapolis Colts this past spring. Rush was waived by the Colts during final cuts before Kansas City scooped him up. Last week, it appeared he’d be onto his third team in five months after the Chiefs released him to make room for Chris Jones on the active roster after his holdout ended.

Rush is a young talent that the Chiefs’ upstairs office feels has the potential to be a contributor on defense in the future. For now, he can look forward to developing on the Chiefs practice team.
