Chiefs re-sign CB Bashaud Breeland

Kansas City brought back another member from its championship roster on Thursday as Terez Paylor of Yahoo! Sports confirms cornerback Bashaud Breeland has signed a one-year deal worth $4.5 million to return as a member of the Chiefs defense.

The news was first reported by ESPN’s Rob Demovsky.

Breeland started 15 regular-season games and all three postseason games for Kansas City in 2019 after joining them as an unrestricted free agent the previous off-season.

Breeland entered the league as a fourth-round draft pick (104th overall) by the Washington Redskins. There, he played four seasons (2014-2017) as one of the team’s starting corners.

In 2018, he signed a three-year contract with the Carolina Panthers that was voided when he failed a physical due to an infection in his foot. Later that year, Breeland visited the Chiefs during training camp but left without signing a contract and ended up spending a brief stint in Green Bay as a midseason pickup before coming to Kansas City the following season.

Breeland finished the 2019 campaign with 48 tackles (37 solo), 8 passes defended, and two interceptions. He also allowed a completion percentage of 48.4 and a QB rating of 92.2 and in Super Bowl 54, he picked off 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo in the first quarter and had six tackles to help Kansas City win the championship.

Breeland returns as the Chiefs’ current number one cornerback on the depth chart after teammate Kendall Fuller signed a 4-year, $40 million deal to return to the Washington Redskins.

As the draft approaches in the coming weeks, re-signing Breeland moves the Chiefs another step towards not having glaring positional needs.
