Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes joins Sporting KC ownership group

When Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes purchased a stake to become part-owner of the Kansas City Royals baseball club back in July 2020, he became the youngest part-owner in sports history. Back in April, the Super Bowl MVP revealed his ambition to build a business empire.

On Tuesday, K.C.’s MLS franchise, Sporting Kansas City, announced in an official statement that Mahomes has joined the team’s ownership group.

In a statement, Sporting’s Principal Owner Cliff Illig welcomed Patrick Mahomes to the team’s ownership group:

“Patrick is a tremendous ambassador for Kansas City and we are delighted to welcome him to the Sporting Club ownership group. In addition to achieving excellence on the field, he is deeply committed to giving back to the community and elevating the sport of soccer. Patrick is also accustomed to cultivating a winning culture, and we look forward to contending for championships at Children’s Mercy Park well into the future.”

Mahomes also released his own statement, expressing his excitement to become even more connected to the Kansas City community.

“I am grateful to join Sporting KC’s ownership team and strengthen my connection to the fans and the city I love. Sporting is a community-oriented club and I am excited to continue supporting the growth of soccer in Kansas City.”

As if being the face of the Chiefs wasn’t big enough, Mahomes is now the co-owner of Kansas City’s other two major professional sports franchises. Along with that, Mahomes’ fiancée, Brittany Matthews, also owns a part of the Kansas City NWSL women’s soccer team.
